From March 15 to March 22, 2026, the preliminary rounds of the 23rd Vis East Moot International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition were held at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Organized by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), this competition is one of the most influential international commercial arbitration moot court competitions in the world. On March 15, Mr. Tan Yueqi(Vincent), an equity partner at Beijing Zhongyin(shenzhen) Law Firm, served as an arbitrator during the preliminary round of the competition.

The Vis East Moot is the Eastern regional competition of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Originally established to honor the late renowned international commercial law scholar Willem C. Vis, the main Vis Moot competition has been held annually in the spring in Vienna, Austria, since 1994. In 2003, Canadian arbitrator Louise Barrington founded the Eastern Division, the Willem C. Vis (East) Moot, in Hong Kong. The Vis East Moot is one of the largest and most prestigious moot court competitions globally, attracting approximately 150 teams from top law schools worldwide—including Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Cambridge, and the National University of Singapore—and over 1,000 students each year. The competition is conducted entirely in English and aims to encourage law students from around the world to delve into cutting-edge issues in international trade law and international commercial arbitration, while honing their practical skills in resolving international commercial disputes.

The competition consists of two phases: written submissions and oral arguments. Judging is conducted by a panel of arbitrators comprising senior professors, lawyers, and arbitration practitioners from around the world, ensuring a high level of professionalism and practical relevance. Participating students are required to conduct legal analysis and engage in debate regarding disputes arising from international sales contracts, applying the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and various arbitration rules.

The competition not only enhances students’ legal research skills, legal analysis abilities, English writing skills, and oral advocacy techniques, but also provides them with a valuable opportunity to interact face-to-face with leading professionals in the international arbitration community. Many participating students have secured internship opportunities at internationally renowned law firms through this platform, laying a solid foundation for future careers in international commercial arbitration. Hailed as the “Olympics of the international arbitration world,” the competition offers a vast platform for exchange and learning among law students globally and serves as a vital pathway for cultivating talent in the field of foreign-related legal affairs.

Equity partner Tan Yueqi(Vincent) possesses extensive practical experience in cross-border legal practice. Prior to the competition, Mr.Tan thoroughly reviewed the case materials; during the online debates, he actively engaged with the competing teams from South China Normal University (representing the claimant) and Deakin University (representing the respondent), demonstrating meticulous legal reasoning and judicial logic of a seasoned arbitrator.
